Safe use of diisocyanates

Training for employees and supervisors working with products containing diisocyanates. A programme tailored to the chemicals used, the tasks performed and working conditions.

We help prepare employees to use diisocyanates safely and meet the training obligation under the REACH Regulation. Before the training, we review the safety data sheets and process information provided, so that the hazards and protective measures discussed relate to participants’ actual tasks.

Who is this training for?

For companies using products containing diisocyanates, including in polyurethane production and processing, bonding, sealing, and the application of coatings and foams.

The training is intended for employees using these products and people supervising such activities. When identifying participants and designing the programme, we also consider tasks involving cleaning, equipment maintenance and waste handling where these involve the use of diisocyanates.

When is training required?

For industrial or professional use of substances and mixtures containing diisocyanates at a combined concentration of at least 0.1% by weight, the training obligation arises from entry 74 of Annex XVII to the REACH Regulation.

Training must be completed before starting to use such products and renewed at least every five years. The employer or self-employed person documents its successful completion.

The training addresses a specific obligation under REACH — it does not replace the employer’s other occupational health and safety obligations.

A programme tailored to the work performed

Our starting point is the products used at the facility, their safety data sheets and the way the work is carried out.

We use this information to determine the required training scope. REACH distinguishes between general, intermediate and advanced training elements. Their selection depends on the tasks performed and the associated exposure, not solely on participants’ preferences.

As applicable, the programme covers:

  • the properties of diisocyanates, health hazards and sensitisation;
  • dermal and inhalation exposure;
  • hazards associated with the products and processes used at the facility;
  • workplace hygiene, ventilation and personal protective equipment — correct use and limitations;
  • safety principles for cleaning, maintenance, and handling spills, packaging and waste;
  • additional topics relevant to the tasks performed by participants.

How do we organise the training?

1. Agreeing your needs

We gather information about the products, workstations, tasks performed and the intended group of participants.

2. Preparing the programme

We review the materials provided and establish a training scope that reflects the client’s uses of diisocyanates.

3. Delivering the training

Training can be delivered on site or online with an instructor. The format, duration, date and group arrangements are specified in the proposal. The instructor must meet the qualification requirements set out in entry 74 of Annex XVII to REACH.

4. Confirming completion

After successfully completing the training, participants receive individual certificates stating its scope. We also provide training materials in electronic form.
